Sunday Evening for Katie

This evening Katie took the sacrament of Confirmation at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Christchurch. Bishop Barry Jones led the confirmation and it was a lovely service.

Katie took the name "Catherine McAuley". Although Catherine is not yet a saint she is venerable and on the journey toward sainthood. Katie chose this name because Catherine and a group of other compassionate women took in homeless women and children in Ireland in the early 1800's and educated them and generally looked after their well being. She went on to found "The Sister's of Mercy" in Ireland. Katie admires this selfless act of caring for those who fall on hard times and face rejection.

It was a group of the Sisters of Mercy that came to New Zealand and established "Villa Maria College" in 1918 which is the Catholic girls college Katie attends.

Sr Anna from Katie's college presented her with a medallion depicting Catherine McAuley tonight and you will see she is wearing it in the second photo, along with the St Christopher medal her Aunty Caroline gave her for her 16th birthday. Both medallions were blessed by the Bishop this evening.

Katie is looking forward now to attending World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, in July along with 250,000 other pilgrims from around the world.

Tonight the Bishop, next month The Pope!

Katie's godmother Bernadette (my cousin) who was her sponsor, Katie and Bishop Barry Jones.

Hi Mr Hunt, yes I've joined the blogosphere ranks, it's rather time consuming isnt it! As for the irish bit we all know what our excuse is now!

Mary from Nelson, Wow small world isn't it for Bishop Barry to be around when you were younger. He has such a lovely friendly manner, we so enjoyed meeting him and so pleased he officiated at the service for Katie.

Thanks for visiting my blog!
