Toby, asleep in his bivvie with 4 other scouts, was awoken to a "rustle, rustle, rip" sound.
He shook Connor, who was asleep next to him and said, "Connor, I think something is out there"
Connor groaned and mumbled his distaste at being shaken and told him to go back to sleep.
"rustle, sniff, rip, scuffle scuffle........... snigger??"
"Connor" Toby loudly whispered, "there is something out there"
"Go back to sleep" Connor demanded.
Toby dismayed at the lack of support to tackle the monstrous beast that was lying in wait close by their sleeping quarters, hankered down and went back to sleep thinking that maybe he must have been dreaming. After all they were sleeping out in the wilderness, under a tarpaulin and the imagination can run away on you.
Next morning, they awoke and delved into their bags at their feet to get shoes.
Toby discovered that a large hole had been ripped in the bottom of his day pack!
A plastic bag of nuts and raisins had been torn open and half eaten and there seemed to be a chocolate bar missing too!
About 4 metres away from their bivvie the boys found the remains of the chocolate bar on the ground.
Clever and fearless creatures those possums, they can walk into a bivvie of 5 sleeping teenagers, choose a bag, rip open the canvas, tear into a plastic bag and feast on nuts and raisins, all the while probably almost sitting on their feet. Strike gold and find a nicely wrapped 'scroggin' Nestle chocolate bar and scamper off to open and devour it without being caught.
Mind you, what would Toby have done had he shone his torch at his feet to follow up on his feeling that 'something was there'. One can just imagine.............
